Amazingly this German paper Christmas candle lantern was used ,and survived, in pretty good condition It was made prewar or just post war of die-cut cardboard, dyed black . Each side shows a different scene in silhouette and these cutouts are backed by lithographed scenes in color which are placed directly behind the outlines. The thin paper backdrops have some tears but are in surprisingly good shape. There are wax remnants at the candle hole. Two air openings on the bottom and designed with an opening at the top. The overall height is 9 1/2" and the width of each side is 5 1/4. Really a lovely example of this lantern form.

Potichomanie was a very popular Victorian handicraft between 1840 and 1870. It is defined as the art of coating the inside of glass vessels with engravings, painting, die cuts, so as to give them the appearance of painted ware. This vase is a particularly attractive example. The vase is classically shaped, mold blown - rough pontil - 11 1/2 tall and about 6 1/2" at its widest point. The condition of the cutout,Victorian chromolithographed illustrations and the gilt Dresden paper is in very good condition. The rest of the vase is painted (all on the inside,of course) a soft grayish blue and the lip is painted an oxidized shade of gold. The signs of age wear are visible on the painted parts. However, given its age it is in a quite nice decorative condition. On the web, you can read a fascinating explanation of potichomanie and Victorian crafts in a draft version of a book by Talia Schaffer entitled, THE IMITATIVE ARTS: THE VICTORIAN DOMESTIC HANDICRAFT and the REALIST NOVEL.

Tony Sarg(1880-1942)was a well known puppeteer and illustrator. Among many other things he was the designer of the early Macy's parade huge balloons (1928) and Macy's elaborate animated Christmas windows. This box of Tony Sarg designed blocks is 14" X 7 1/2" It contains 8 delightful cube shaped blocks each featuring a different animal - cow, dog, elephant, frog, goat, alligator, bear, cock - c,d,e,f,g,a,b,c - the musical notes. Each block has a jingling device inside and different illustrations on 5 of its 6 sides. The box is dated 1942 and claims "The ONLY Toy that AUTOMATICALLY Makes EVERY TOT A MUSICIAN". The original box and all the blocks are here. However, the box is worn ,although generally intact. The blocks have very good color and all have their musical devices. The biggest problem are water marks - more evident on the box than on the blocks. See photos. Still, a fairly intact toy designed by a great illustrator.

An authentically old candle pyramid is very hard to come by- the heat of the candles cause the blades to rotate , in turn, this rotates the centers of the two tiers - the parts holding the Erzgebirge figures. This 16" tall example, most likely German made in the Erzgebirge area, dates from about the turn of the century and comes out of Pennsylvania. Its base is about 6 3/4" square. The blades are painted tin. The central turning column is beautifully turned in a spiraling pattern. The highest tier has 2 Erzgebirge animals - horse and deer (missing one tiny antler). The lower tier has 2 angels with upright wings(one angel is missing one arm),a soldier and a sponge tree. Each tier has 4 classical columns defining the space. All this topped by a lovely dome, a golden ball, the blades and a golden finial. There is some paint loss but really not bad at all. You should be able to get good detail from the photos.

A wonderful toy village. Perfect for a Christmas garden, a mantelpiece or a train layout. Consists of 10 buildings in the Deco/Colonial Revival style. The condition of all the buildings is quite good -some have bits of cellophane missing - about a score of 9 out of 10. They all have openings for lights. There are three different styles of homes, a R.R. Station, a
Telegraph Office, a Supermarket, a Bank, a Theater, a Gasoline Station and a Movie house. Since I photographed these buildings, I have also acquired the RR signal tower and a Bathhouse (this one is the same shape as the RR Sta.) - please inquire about the two additional buildings.

The Little King was a comic strip character created by Otto Soglow in the early 1930s. This charming little walking king is probably from the '30s or '40's. He is made of wood with lithographed features, 4" tall and 2 1/4" across the base. He moves when you pull the little ring on the string coming out of his headgear. However I am sure he was meant to move more dynamically
because one can see remnants of dried up rubber band material on grooves on the spool which are his "feet". Condition of the figure is very good, his perambulations must be left to an engineer.
