| Potichomanie was a very popular Victorian handicraft between 1840 and 1870. It is defined as the art of coating the inside of glass vessels with engravings, painting, die cuts, so as to give them the appearance of painted ware. This vase is a particularly attractive example. The vase is classically shaped, mold blown - rough pontil - 11 1/2 tall and about 6 1/2" at its widest point. The condition of the cutout,Victorian chromolithographed illustrations and the gilt Dresden paper is in very good condition. The rest of the vase is painted (all on the inside,of course) a soft grayish blue and the lip is painted an oxidized shade of gold. The signs of age wear are visible on the painted parts. However, given its age it is in a quite nice decorative condition. On the web, you can read a fascinating explanation of potichomanie and Victorian crafts in a draft version of a book by Talia Schaffer entitled, THE IMITATIVE ARTS: THE VICTORIAN DOMESTIC HANDICRAFT and the REALIST NOVEL. | ||||||
